Some memories from some local residents

I lived in Shephall and went to Heathcote. Most of my memories in the 80’s are from Heathcote school days. We used to spend lots of weekends at the Times Club at the discos there, and in the earlier days went to Annabellas. We always met by the fountain in the town centre on a Saturday and spent the day wondering around the town looking to see who we knew there – we never really did any shopping !!My dad ran the newsagents at the Hyde which used to be thriving, sadly when I visited recently it was not so good there. We knew everyone – the butcher, the greengrocer, the chemist and everyone shopped there locally. Dad’s shop was always really busy. I also remember Cody’s opposite Nat West on Queensway. It was one of the first American type diners and I had my 18th Birthday party there !

One of the big events I remember was the Queen concert 1986. I was working in Codicote at the time and what was a 20 minute journey from home to work on a normal day turn into a 5 hour journey due to the gridlock around Stevenage. Excellent concert though

The Cromwell Hotel opposite us, Elmes hardware store, NSS newsagents, the hordes of kids descending at lunchtime from St Angelas, Barclays, and Alleynes (and the teachers in the Two Diamonds "passing round the ready-rub"), the huge oak trees outside the shop (and when they blew down), the fair ride that demolished the red phone box outside the White Lion, the International store on the corner of Walkern Road, Sainsburys being in the town centre, Geo W King the crane builders, the Platignum pen factory, the Co-Op where Primark is, Dixons where Iceland now is, Manulife, the Dixons warehouse in Pin Green, the ESA factory, British Aerospace, Preslands Records, Bunnys Video shop, Head Office hairdressers and, for some reason, Corona Limeade and Lager. Yum!
